How to enable RPC service after disabled? (Thanks to the MsBlast)

Fred

I got the msblaster worm yesterday. I called my friend and he told me
to stop the rpc service and try. Since the service couldn't be stop,
I disabled it (for hardware profile 1) instead. After rebooted, I
downloaded the patch from Microsoft and tried to install it but
failed. It said something like "cannot start setup, make sure
cryptography service are running....".

Then I tred to enable back the rpc services, here came another big
problem: I couldn't even view the properties of ANY services. I
couldn't enable the rpc because I couldn't open the properties of the
service no matter how.

I've spent more than 6 hours reading postings here and the MS
bulletin, support, KB, but couldn't find the answer. Can anybody
help?

Thanks.

You need to boot into Recovery Console. Boot from the XP CD, and when
given the option to Repair or Install, choose Repair.

Once in Recovery Console, issue the following command:

ENABLE RPCSS SERVICE_AUTO_START

I did exactly the same than Fred.
I tried your hint with the recovery console, but this doesn't fix the problem.

I fixed the problem by following a message posted by Anton B. in
annoyances.org. Hope that it helps. To view the original:

I copied the message as follow:

I am rather happy at the solution I stumbled on to. I hypothesized
that the reason behind the non-compliance of RPC from starting was the
hardware profile not being selected. I modified the following registry
key: HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\Legacy_RPCSS\0000
Then I changed the CSConfigFlags from 1 to 4 (choosing my hardware
profile). After changing it, I tried to start the RPC service and it
did. I restarted the computer and everything came back to normal.
Hopefully people who have the same problem may refer here for a
possible solution :) Many thanks :)
