How to download Office if I can't find my repacement discs?

L

Lee

My lap top's hard drive crashed but I was able to retrieve all of my
information, thankfully. However, I'm unable to locate the MS Office
replacement discs and honestly don't recall even receiving them. The techies
were able to retrieve all of my information but without the operating systems
(Word, Excell, Windows, Outlook Express, PowerPoint, etc. , I'm unable to use
my information.

If i'm unable to locate the discs yet I have proof that I purchased the
whole system with my lap top, is there a way I can download or somehow obtain
replacement discs?

Please tell me yes!

Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) was never part of any operating
system. These are a separate software.

You need to locate your Windows XP Cds. Xp comes with Internet
Explorer 6, which has Outlook Express "built-in."

Microsoft has never made any versions of Windows or non-trial software
packages, so you can not officailly download these. (You can find
these on P2P systems. however, quality of the distribution files and
virus scanning it extremely questionable.)

If you have a receipt, call the dealer you bought it from. Get
replacements, even at a reduced price it would be better to have the
right ones.

See if MS still has a "media replacement" office.

I've used it a couple times. They charged a little more than the cost
of shipping. You neeeded to have your keys, obviously.

Lots of luck.

If you just want to read these office files, Microsoft has free viewers
for word, excel, and powerpoint. Not trial, but free viewers. And
when they say view, they mean it, you can't edit. Its not a crippled
version that won't save, no, you just can't do anything but view and
print.
Just search microsoft downloads. Most of them come as a 2007 version
and a 2003 version. I've downloaded all 3 and use them as they take up
less space on a laptop. I can write letters with Wordpad. I don't do
that much fancy stuff in letters anyway. Besides, who writes letters,
its email and IM now right? :)

As others have mentioned, you may certainly download free *viewers* from
Microsoft. But if you want to either edit these documents or create new
ones, you will need to install Office or a suite similar to it. If you
opt for the latter and want something free, Open Office is highly
regarded:

As long as you're running Windows, you already have Outlook Express.

If you purchaed the laptop new, hopefully whoever sold it to you still
has the records of what was included in the sale, so perhaps they can
assist you. If you had purchased Office on your own (say, from a big box
store), then Microsoft could help you, but it doesn't sound like this is
what happened.

What is the make and model of your laptop? Sometimes
manufacturers/retailers include products (like Office), but you're still
paying for them! And they should have included the insallation disks. If
this is the case, look harder. Or, again, contact whoever sold it to
you.

But you might find you equally like Open Office. And it is free. :)

If you are unable to find the disks or to have them replaced by the original
vendor, you could try downloading Open Office, which is a freeware
alternative to Microsoft Office and is quite capable of reading Word and
Excel files. Not sure about Powerpoint though.
It's a pretty big download so be prepared for it to take a while.
