How to download already read emails?

I can send messages and check new mails but I can't download the already
read ones from my Gmail inbox, neither the sent messages.

Is there a solution?

When mail is downloaded, it is deleted from the server unless you have
selected otherwise.

To check if they are only hidden, click on the folder which should contain
them, then View, then Current View, then Show All Messages.

To do that you would have to switch to the IMAP version of Gmail.

IMAP allows your local folders to have a mirror copy of whatever is
in the folders on the server.
