How to display video-in signal?

Johannes Lebek

Hi all,

I have an IBM ThinkPad A31p that has an ATI FireGL 7800 with ViVo built in.
Windows XP's Movie Maker lets me record the video input, but what I am
looking for, is a software that lets me view the input in full-screen mode.

Any recommendations? (preferably, freeware...)

Thanks,
Johannes

The TV/Video In app in all recent versions of ATi's MMC will, Johannes -
just click on the optional software link at the bottom of the Ati driver
page. That is, it will for Built by Ati Radeon cards, if yours is a Built
by or Mobility card, it may be different - check with the manufacturer.

patrickp,

thanks for your answer. My graphics card has an ATi Mobility Radeon 7500
chip on board. It is a Mobility card, so I guess, this is the reason why my
ATi driver has no video-in application.

Still the question: Which application allows me to view my video input in
full-screen mode?

Johannes
No, the ATi display drivers don't provide video input in any version: they
simply handle the card's normal display functions. MMC is optional extra
software that's usually provided with Built by cards, but not always with
OEMs or mobility cards. However, OEMs and mobility cards can often run MMC;
and most can run some older versions. That's why I said check with the
manufacturer; they should tell you whether there's a version you can use
with your card, although they may not supply it.

In that case, you would be able to download the version you can use from the
ATi site.

There are also other applications for viewing video with your card, but
since I've always found MMC adequate, I've never checked them out. Perhaps
someone else here could tell you; there's mention of software like this in
the threads sometimes. Try searching on TV as well as video, because
they're often AFAICR referred to as TV apps.

Thanks, patrickp! Now I know that MMC is an additional software from ATI for
their graphics cards. Although version 8.5 (includes a software DVD player)
is not freely downloadable, version 7.7 is. And it looks pretty much like it
is what I'm looking for. I will try it now.
Thanks again,

Johannes

Actually, MMC 8.5 _is_ freely downloadable, Johannes; it's just the DVD app
that you have to buy a CD to download. The same actually goes for the older
DVD players, too: you'll need an ATi CD (older and cheaper, though) to
install them (although you can download them). But the other software's
free.

The reason for charging for the DVD players is that they use proprietary
software: up to and including DVD 7.7 is based on the Ravisent Cinemaster
DVD player, and the DVD 2.x versions with MMC 8.x are based on CyberLink's
PowerDVD player.
