How to create more space for XP in a dual boot with 98?

G

Gerrit Lansink

I work with a Windows XP - Windows 98 dual boot system (Partition
Magic 7.0 and Boot Magic) on a 60 GB hard disk. XP is in the first
Primary partition (4.998 MB, FAT 32) and 98 in the second Primary
partition (4.998 MB, FAT 32). The rest of the hard disk is a Logical
FAT 32 partition.
My problem: Windows XP asks for more space (has only 200 MB free space
now).
What can I do, without re-installing XP? And, if possible, even
without re-installing Windows 98? I tried to enlarge the XP-partition
(with 2 GB, keeping 98 within the 8 GB ‘boot border') with Partition
Magic, but got a message saying that FAT32 does not allow such an
extention.
Can I move files from the XP Primary partition to the Logical
partition?
Anyone has got a sollution?

Hi

The PM manual/help files will show you how to extend the XP partition. Search the help files for 'resizing', 'free space', 'scenario', 'adding'. If you move the XP files from a Primary partition to a Logical one, you won't be able to boot your PC using that OS - without converting that partition to 'Primary'.

Do you have all your XP applications on the same partition as XP? If so I'd
suggest deleting them* and reinstalling them to another drive.

I dual boot my own system and have dedicated partitions for XP Program files
(NTFS) and 98 Program Files (FAT32). This way there's always enough room
for any temporary files that may be created when certain app's are in use.

I installed XP in its own NTFS partition and also have dedicated partitions
for "My Documents", Outlook Express message folders and the Outlook PST
file.

This arrangement keeps things clearer for me and makes backing up so much
easier (heartly recommend PQ's latest version of Drive Image).

Of course it will take you some time having to reinstall things but would be
worth it in the end.

But then this poses another question... given all the work this will take
why not take the opportunity to get a bigger drive? They are so cheap now.
(Check out Western Digital WD1200JB). This way you can start from scratch
with clean fresh installs of everything in their own dedicated partitions.

Hope all this is useful.
