How to Create Group Policy Object in XP Home?

D

Don Cohen

I am still trouble-shooting a problem where I can no longer offer Remote
Assistance to my out-of-town children's computers, which I believe arose
after I replaced the original hard drive of my XP Home computer, and
restored the OS partition from the original using DriveImage 2002. This
apparently created a new SID, which is responsible for the "There is a
problem with the invitation..." message I now receive when trying to open up
a RA session. This used to work just fine with several other computers, all
running XP Home.

I came across this MSKB Article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555385

This seems to identify my situation, and recommends, as a work around,
creating a Group Policy Object, and adding a script entry to run
"sessmgr.exe -service". The problem is that since my system is XP Home, so
far I've been unable to find a way to do this. (I've also seen the
suggestion to just run this in Safe Mode, which I've tried, but no change in
the problem.)

Can anybody tell me if, and how, I can create such a Group Policy Object on
my XP Home system, and if there are any reasons this would be inadvisable??

Thanks.

remote assistance has
never been reliable for me.

however, i discovered something
called "simple desktop" and was
pretty reliable connecting with
other pcs.

it might still be a free service and
requires creating an account on
a server. Then it simply requires
the other pc's to log into that account.

pretty simple.....

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I'll look into it, especially if I
can't get Windows RA working. It has worked just fine for me in the past.

Best,

Hi Jack,

To recap:

After cloning my previous OS partition to a new larger hard drive, using
DriveImage 2002, I can no longer provide Remote Assistance on my XP Home
system, to my kids' computers (out of town). Before this drive migration,
it worked just fine. In trouble-shooting this, it appears that there has
been an SID change which is preventing RA from operating properly. The
following MSKB describes the problem, and the work-around:

That link shows how to create a Group Policy Object snap-in, normally an XP
Pro function, on an XP Home system.

I got the 2 dll files referenced (gpedit.dll and fde.dll), registered them,
and after running 'mmc' was able to select Group Policy Object as a Snap-in.

According to the instructions here in the MSKB article, the next step would
be to go to 'Computer Configuration'...'Windows Settings', and then
'Scripts(Startup/Shutdown)' in order to create a new entry to run
"sessmgr.exe -service" at startup.

The problem is that when I go to Computer Configuration...Windows
Settings... there are no entries there, for 'Scripts' or anything else, so I
don't see how I can create a new entry. I'm guessing that the 2 dll files
enabled me to create a GPO snap-in, but doesn't have the 'fleshed out'
features to actually use it. Unless there's something I missing, which I'm
hoping is the case.

Any idea on how I can implement the workaround suggested in this MSKB
article??

Thanks.
