How to create a test system from the production environment

Hello,
First of all I'm a newbie :) Here's the problem
We have some problems with our exchange server. We had to restore a
backup and now we want to get the remaining mails from the corrupted
database. For that we want to use exmerge in a test environment with a
dc and exchange server.
Our dc's users are old enough that the exmerge is not working so we
have to update the dc in the test environment. So we have created a dc
in the production environment then unplugged it and put it into the
test environment.
First we had problems installing exchange on a clean win 2000 advanced
server.
Then with ntdsutil I've tried to change the roles of the dc. As it's a
totally different network it couldn't connect to the master server but
changed some roles anyway. But in the AD schema most of the classes
security are empty now. And we can't change it. Whenever we try we get
Unable to save permission changes on Attribure-Schema:The directory
service is busy.
And when we try to install exchange server we get the following error:
A server object for this server (MAILSERVER) already exists in the
administratition group "first administrative group" You must either
remove this server object before installing, or run setup with
disaster recovery switch if you are attempting to recover this server"
So I think a good updated test environment is important how can I
create one from our existing domain.
Thank you

Erman-

Your best bet:

1. Restore a domain controller from a backup (make sure you aren't on the
same network).

2. Restore Exchange to another server once your domain controller restore
is complete.

3. Use Exmerge to grab mail.
