Hmmm. Under ADC you mean Active Directory Connector, Active Directory
Controller,... ? I think that both servers are DC's, but one of them is not
a global catalog server. You can designate a server to be a GC by opening AD
Sites and Services, locating a server and in properties of NTDS settings of
the server object check Global Catalog check box.

Is that additional DC also a global catalog server ? Also you must make
sure, that both your DC's are also DNS servers, so that the clients/servers
can locate DC's on your network.

Imran,

It sounds as though you're a little confused as to the way that Windows 2000
works.
Domain Controllers keep a copy of the directory. In Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0,
there are two kinds of Domain Controllers-Primary Domain Controllers (PDCs)
and Backup Domain Controllers (BDCs). Primary Domain Controllers hold a
read/write copy while Backup Domain Controllers hold a read-only copy. In
Windows 2000, all Domain Controllers for a given domain hold a writeable
copy of the directory. There is no distinction between primary and backup;
all domain controllers are equal. This is why when your "DC" is taken off
the network, users can still authenticate against your "ADC".

To achieve what you want, I would suggest making both of your domain
controllers into global catalog servers and DNS servers. If your "DC" also
holds the FSMO roles and it fails, you will need to seize those roles on the
"ADC", but if you haven't made your "ADC" into a GC you will run into a
world of hurt. If your "DC" has been taken off the network, put it back on
the network and make your "ADC" into a GC and DNS server before removing
your "DC."

Cheers, katherine
