How to clear "embedded" DNS settings

Comcast tried to set up a laptop and somehow their DNS settings have gotten
"embedded" in the XP's registry.

Whenever I set the NIC to use DHCP and automatically obtain an IP address,
the "embedded" DNS servers are used and it can't find anything.

If I set the IP, Gateway and DNS manually everything works. But the user
doesn't know how to do this and he moves between 3 locations in addition to
his home (where the Comcast types got their hands on it).

I have used netsh to try to reset the DNS servers but it reverts back on
reboot.

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious but help would sure be appreciated.

Try removing the network card from Device Manager, then restart and let it
reinstall and see if that will reset the settings.

Thanks. That at least got the old DNS settings out of the system. But it
still won't configure itself. Neither the NIC nor the wireless network will
find the DHCP server in the router here.

Again, if I assign an IP, Gateway, etc. it works fine.

Any thoughts?

Found it! DHCP Client was not running. It would not start because a
Symantec uninstall failed to remove a dependency that it had created. Edited
the registry and it runs fine now.

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

Yet another way that Symantec can stab you in the back.

Glad you were finally able to figure it out and that I could contribute some
small amount to your solution.
