how to cite the equation/table/figure with number only?

for example, i have one equation : a=b+c (1), i need to cite it as "equation (1)" in the manuscript, but i always get "equation a=b+c (1)". i have to revise all the citations one by one.
i mean in word 2000/XP, under the menu "insert/reference/cross-reference/equation", in the "insert fererence to", there is no "number only" item. how to cite the equation with number only?

Thanks!

If you put the caption in the same paragraph with the equation, this will be
the inevitable result. The usual solution is to use a two-column borderless
table with the equation in one cell and the caption in another.
