How to change COM port that modem needs

A

Aidan Brick

As a result of a recent hard disk failure, a re-installation of XP has
caused a slight problem. The installed Best Data Fax Modem is not working.
It's properties show that it is using COM3 but a check in device manager
only shows COM1 and 2 available. There is no obvious means of changing the
COM port in the modem properties. Does anyone have any idea how this can be
achieved?
Many thanks.

Com1 and Com2 are reserved for devices that are plugged into the hardware
ports that are usually on the rear of the computer (external modem etc).
Com3 is the next available port and is typically assigned to an internal
modem. The modem will work on Com3 if you have installed the requisite modem
drivers.

My modem uses Com 3 and Com 1 is the only Com port listed under ports.

Uninstall and reinstall the modem.

Happened to me once Aidan: as a last resort I changed the PCI slot into which
the Modem slots. It worked and COM3 was automatically assigned. Advice back.

All analog modems come with an integrated COM port. Plug in a modem and you
simultaneously add a COM port.
