Enabling a COM Port

I just installed a new modem card. The system sees the card and when I run
the diagnostic, it passes. However, when trying to connect to line I get a
"no dialtone detected" error. Windows help says to check that the COM port
is enabled. I check my COM ports and only show COM1, which is enabled. The
modem is setup for COM3. Do I need to add a COM3, and if so how do I do that
and how do I enable it? Thanks for the help.

No Dial-Tone isn't Port related. I know this seems obvious, but
could you have inserted the RJ plug into the 2nd socket with a
Phone icon, instead of the Input socket ?

Right. The problem was that I was connected to a non-conventionally wired
phone plug. Thanks for responding.
