Look at the manual for your motherboard or computer on how to get into the
BIOS settings.

What manual? Is there any other way of finding out how to change my BIOS?
Is
there any simple way to boot from the Windows XP CD? I just need to
reinstall
Windows XP for goodness's sake!
Now, now Sonia, don't get too upset about this. These people are only trying
to help you. What they're driving at is that you have to enter your
motherboard's BIOS in order to change the boot order of your bootable
devices. So in order to enter the BIOS you have to strike the right key or
keys when you begin the bootup process, i.e., when you power up your
computer. If you don't strike the right keys at the right time, the normal
bootup will continue, probably booting to your hard drive.
So when you do strike the right key(s) and enter the BIOS you'll have to
locate the section that refers to the boot order. It's called different
names by different motherboards. But you can locate it. I'm sure you can.
When you finally get to that section, you'll change the boot order of your
devices by making sure that your CD/DVD-ROM is first in the boot order.
You'll then insert your XP installation CD, save the configuration, and exit
the BIOS. You'll get a screen message during the ensuing bootup indicating
you should press a key if you want to boot from the CD. Do so. That message
doesn't appear very long on screen so pay attention.
Now, I indicated earlier that you have to press the right key(s) in order to
enter the BIOS at bootup. Ay, there's the rub! There are different
keystrokes for different motherboards. That's why you were asked to consult
your motherboard's manual which would inform you which keystroke is the one
you need. The more usual ones are the Delete key or F1 or F2, but there are
others that may be applicable. You could try those for a start. If still no
go, point to
http://www.inventio.co.uk/getbios.htm where there's a listing
of the various keystrokes for entering the BIOS.
Good luck.
