how to backup email and all email account settings?

I need to do a hard disk format but I don't want to loose all my emails and
email account9s) settings.

How do I perform this ?

To backup your E-mail, Contacts, Calendar and anything else stored in
Outlook you need to backup the Personal Folder File (.pst). To locate the
path to the file or files in use Open Outlook and go to File -> Data File
Management. This will display all of the .pst files being used in Outlook.
Now you can select the .pst file and click Open Folder and it will open the
folder that contains the .pst file(s). From here you can copy the file(s)
to a safe location (CD or another harddrive) until you done formatting. As
for the account settings you will need to manually record the account
settings as there is no way to save it out of Outlook automatically.

Actually, you can use the Save My Settings Wizard to back up Outlook mail
account settings and other settings stored in the registry.

Where can you find the "Save My Settings Wizard"? Are you talking about the
files and settings transfer wizard under system tools for xp?

Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office Tools>Save My Settings Wizard

Ok but Outlook doesn't appear on my wizard menu of settings being
transferred. I can add by pointing to the right folder, except I am not sure
which folder the account settings are in. Where does Outlook put these?

Trust me - the "Save my Settings" Wizard WILL save all your Outlook
settings.

That's the "Save My Settings" wizard that can be found in Start-All
Programs-Microsoft Office-Office Tools, NOT the File and settings transfer
wizard.

Can i schedule the save my settings wizard to do a regular backup?
I just want to backup the outlook pst file and a regular base without user
intervention.

The "Save My Settings" wizard does NOT backup the pst file - it only backs
up the account information and rules.

OUTLOOK 2003 and up will backup your pst file automatically. I then do a
copy of this backup file to an external hard drive, as well as a standard
system backup.

Actually, it's very easy to make the Save My Settings wizard back up just about anything. The file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OPW11USR.INI controls the default behavior. (Or you can create a custom .ini file.) Make a backup copy of it, then find the section for [ExcludeFiles]. *.pst is listed by default as one of the file types to exclude. Put a # symbol at the beginning of the line, save the file, and .pst files from the locations where the wizard looks for data (also a setting you can adjust) will no longer be excluded.

Of course, including .pst files means the .ops file that the wizard creates potentially will be much, much larger.

Also note that starting in Outlook 2003, rules are in the .pst file that is the default information store. Thus the wizard doesn't back up rules unless you back up the .pst file.

So when I say 'will' - I mean you can set it to perform a backup regularly
for you - it then asks you if you want to do this backup on exiting OUTLOOK
depending on the schedule you have specified..

Um, no. Outlook has no built-in way to make backups. You must either do it
yourself or use the PFBACKUP add-in. You said "OUTLOOK 2003 and up will..."
That's simply not true. The add-in will and it will do so for most (if not
all) versions of Outlook that exist, but Outlook itself will not.

I don't understand....

If you click on File, Backup ...you can configure this option. I have it
configured to remind me every 7 days, and then when I close OUTLOOK on that
seventh day, it asks if I want to do the backup first. It then backs up to a
file called Outlook Backup.pst in the same location as my .pst file.

That command is added by the Personal Folders Backup add-in. It is not native to Outlook.

Well I have never added it to any of my PCs running both OUTLOOK 2003 and
2007. And they all have the command.
