How to backup all in the docs and setting folders?

Mike Barnard

Hi again.

Following on from my previous message about the quick launch bar, I
find I'm having difficulty copying my old data.

I have built a new PC running Vista. I wish to copy all from my old
PC (XP pro sp2) documents and settings so I don't lose anything.
Cookies with login info from sites, shortcuts to sites and
applications, etc.

If I use a backup program such as Acronis it stores the files in
compressed format. Installing Acronis on the new PC I get permissions
errors trying to access my backups. No go.

If I try to drag and drop onto my USB external drive I get "This file
is in use" errors and it keeps stopping the process. I've tried
copying one folder at a time but it takes ages and I seem to have
missed loads. I THOUGHT I'd copied cookies for example, but can I
find it now? Nah.

So, is there a program or method that will copy ALL from in my docs
and settings, (application data, et all) to a designated source,
ignoring in use errors, and keeping the files un compressed?

Or am I asking too much to want to keep my data?

(I know there is a transfer wizard but I don't have the infrastructure
to network and run the two pc's at the same time)

(The old pc's C drive is in RAID with the info split between two
drives for speed, so I can't attach it to the new PC to copy files, I
can only access it with the original PC running. A mistake I won't be
making this time!)

Thanks for any advice.

If you haven't done so already you might want to post your
questions to a Vista newsgroup. There's a better chance someone
there will have tried what your attempting. One of these would
probably be an appropriate place to post.

microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup

Have you tried running the transfer wizard and saving the file
on your external USB drive? You can then hook up the external
drive to your Vista machine and complete the transfer.

One final note, I don't think you'll find passwords for web
sites or email maintained during any sort of transfer from one
pc to another.

Good luck

This is simple using the built in transfer in Vista. Just type 'backup from
old computer' in the help and voila!

Actualy, I searched for Vista in my list of available groups from
Newsdemon and there were only two foreign language ones. Must look
further into this.

No, but I will! Nice idea. I've never used this wizard but it's time
to try it.

Cookies. The My Cookies folder is full of cookies that hold such
info. I think.
Good luck

You too.

Ah, but they both need to be running together and networked, I assume.

Thanks anyway. Nice of you to help.

1. Transfer Wizard.
2. ntbackup.exe as supplied with XP Pro and Home (not installed by default
in Home; has to be installed manually).
3. Winzip
4. DVDs or CDs depending on file sizes.

No, In Vista it explains how to run the programme on xp then put the goods
onto removable gear then onto your new computer with vista. worked ok
