How to adjust volume for linked sounds?

In "Sound Options" for linked sounds in my PowerPoint presentation, the
"Sound Volume" adjustment icon does not work to decrease (or increase) the
volume. It only works to turn the sound off completely if the bar/button is
drug all the way to the bottom or if the mute box is checked. Otherwise the
adjustment bar/button has no effect on the volume. (I want to soften
background music.)
 
You really need to use a sound editing application to make these adjustments
externally from PowerPoint.
