How to add file type to "Recent Documents" list

Does anyone know how to add a file type to the list of files shown in the
"Recent Documents" folder and list in WindowsXP ?

I have Office 2003, but regularly open .xlsx (Office 2007 Excel files) and
would like to have them appear in the "Recent Documents" folder and list.
The files appear in the Recent list in Excel 2003, but not the WindowsXP
list.

Hi Kevin,

In Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab, do you have "Hide
extensions for known file types" unchecked?

You can't control this on a file-type basis. Either the program that opens
the file adds it to the recently-used list or it doesn't. I have noticed
that Office programs add files to this list when you use File | Open but not
when you use their own recent files function. Try opening the file that way
(File | Open) or by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer and see if it
gets put in your Recent Documents list.

OF COURSE, after saying this I tested it (in Excel 2003) and it DID add a
file to the Recent Documents list when I opened it from Excel's recent files
list. Argh. I swear I've done it in the past and it was NOT added to the
list that way.

Lesson: test first, then post ;-)
