The Key Update Tool will attempt an automatic internet activation but it that's not
possible, the key will be changed regardless and you'll have to telephone to
activate.

You will need to do a "repair re-install" on top of the installed pirated
version. The pirated versions are usually based on Volume License versions of
XP Pro and you can not "convert" it to Retail or OEM licensed versions just by
changing the key (or can you???)

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.
