How to activate my new drive?

W

Walter R.

Running win XP Pro 3.

I bought a new 500 GB SATA drive plus an external drive enclosure with a USB
connection. Power to the external drive is provided by a small power supply
that plugs into the wall socket. I intend to use this new external drive as
another backup drive for my computer.

I use a PCI converter that allows me to run 2 SATA hard drives in my old IDE
motherboard. I am using both connections for SATA drives.

How do I initiate, partition and format the new drive? Can this be done with
WinXp and the USB connection? If this works, I would not have to open my
computer and shuffle drives around.

Thanks

If it serves me correctly, Plug drive in, power and USB, go to control
panel,Admin tools, Computer management, disk management, and there you can
format, partion etc etc. You will see all drives that are active and
inactive from there.

Assemble the new hard drive in the enclosure. Plug in the USB connector.
Power up the drive. You should hear the Windows sound effect for
"new device detected". Windows has a "USB Mass Storage" class driver
built in. You may even be able to look in Device Manager now, to
see the details of the box you connected.

Go to Disk Management, and look for your new drive.

If it's connecting to the PC via USB, sometimes you will have drive
letter conflicts. If you plug in the device, and its not detected in
My Computer, go to Disk Management, as Paul and

From there the drive should be listed, and you can change the drive
letter by right-clicking it and choosing "Change Drive Letter and
