How stop constant MS Message "Delayed write failed" ?

How can I disable the constant, repeated messages from MS when I turn off
the Exterior Harddrive and it comes up again and again:

Windows-Delayed Write Failed. Etc etc.
 
Is it a USB drive? If so, there should be an icon in your Systray that allows you to disconnect/shutoff properly.
 
It is an USB device.
I will try that and see whether that stops it.
