how open a new document w/o having to select b/w blank & blog

Word 2007 now requires you to select between a blank document template or a
blog temple. I always want just a new blank document. I don't want to have
to chose a template every time. It didn't use to do this before when I
clicked on the New icon. Is there some way to disable this "feature?"

You can add the New Blank Document command to the QAT using Customize.
