Well, I just went to Windows Update and, lo and behold, WGA IV is now
available for downloading.

This is really getting ridiculous.

That's the one that keeps wanting to phone home.

Not the same one. This one came out yesterday. I have the one that
phones home on my computer now and I have yet to download WGA IV.

Just checked the Spanish WU and it's there too, listed as a "high
priority" update.

Jeesh.

Yep - the bar-steward is back yet again - I shall just let it sit there for
a while.
I have denied access via Zone Alarm for the moment just in case I turn off
and forget that I don't want it to download.

I guess you missed WGA III then.

I must have, because this is the first time the friggin' thing has made
such a stinkin' nuisance of itself. The first time, it was a big
nothin'...

....well I don't know...

I just looked at my update history, and this is what it says:

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) (5/31)

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) (5/23)

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) (4/26)

How many times must I tell Microsoft that I'm genuine?

Rhonda:

I'm curious.. which firewall app are you using? I've downloaded all of
the versions of WGA from Windows Update, and I haven't seen any
connection attempts from WGAtray yet.

I'm running a retail copy.. I wonder if it treats OEMs differently?

I've managed to have only KB892130. What happens if I don't download any of
the others? Do I turn into a pumpkin?

It's been ridiculous right from the start.

I think there is some mole very high up at MS that is actually trying to
get people to dump Windows, as at this point only industrial sabotage
makes sense, as no company could be this stupid to f*&k over their
customers like this.

All it really takes is for Bill Gates to give the word. Of
course, if his carrot-top is that of Alfred E. Neumann's,
then it really explains a lot.

I'm glad unticked the box to say "no thanks", and the one to say "don't
remind me about it" then.

I know the Windows on my Toshiba laptop is genuine. If Microsoft
doesn't, that's its problem, and it has no right to make it my problem
too.

Worst thing you can do is let window up-date automatically.... if yo
did it manually you know what is being installed.... you only need t
look at the problems updates are causing

How dya think Billy tries this and that out...

<ducking> Well, first off, I don't think it has anything to do with the
firewall, but at the risk of having Kurt beat me about the head with a
stick, I will admit that I am currently experimenting with OneCare. It
means that I end up running Multi_AV and a whole lot of other stuff
pretty regularly, but IMO, Microsoft has done well. (I don't know if
I'll keep it, but we'll see how it goes.) The one thing I don't like is
that it goes red if I don't keep the automatic update "feature" turned
on. It's very disconcerting to keep looking down at that glaring red
icon in the tray, so now I just try to remember to get to update to see
what's up before it gets to me.

Note to Leythos: OneCare phones home all the time to report on me (yes,
that's what it's doing), but I accept that, because I agreed to be
monitored when I installed the beta. I never agreed to all this WGA
nonsense.
I've downloaded all of
the versions of WGA from Windows Update, and I haven't seen any
connection attempts from WGAtray yet.

What I downloaded yesterday is the one that loads itself at startup and
immediately tries to phone home. None of the others did or I would have
noticed.
I'm running a retail copy.. I wonder if it treats OEMs differently?

Maybe. But why?

NO. It is a prelim to getting the customers to buy the m$ "virus protection"
to replace all other companies' apps; with the m$ protection scheme, the WGA
irritations will be gone.

WGA?

You may wish to reread the EULA, I've quoted part of it and the last
sentence in the quoted section really says it all.

"* Mandatory Activation. The license rights granted under this
EULA are limited to the first thirty (30) days after
you first install the Product unless you supply
information required to activate your licensed copy in
the manner described during the setup sequence of the
Product. You can activate the Product through the use
of the Internet or telephone; toll charges may apply.
You may also need to reactivate the Product if you modify
your computer hardware or alter the Product. There are
technological measures in this Product that are designed
to prevent unlicensed or illegal use of the Product.
You agree that we may use those measures."

The Product was activated on my computer.

I have not modified my computer and I have not altered the Product.

I agreed to the measures in place at the time I accepted the agreement.
I did not agree to WGA and I did not agree that WGA would be allowed to
phone home using my bandwidth day after day.

Microsoft has compelled my de facto agreement, but I seem to remember
something about agreements under duress not being binding.
