hOW MANY INSTALLS PER UPGRADE

G

Guest

I just bought the commercial upgrade to XP pro for my home computeres. I
upgraded XP home to XP pro and Windows 200 to XP pro. Infortunately when I
registeredthe software the original contact came from the former XP home
machine. In reality I would MUCH prefer the upgrade on my old WIN 2000 PC.

How many installs does microsoft allow per purchased upgrade?

If the answer is 1 (what a ripoff!) what can I do to minimize the cost of
the next upgrade?
Thanks in advane for your help.

One as you stated and as is mentioned on the box.
This is the way it has always been with all consumer Microsoft
operating systems since at least Windows 95.

Shop around for the best deal on upgrades is the way to get best

Each installation of Windows XP, installed on a different computer,
requires it's own unique license (Product Key). Therefore, if you
wish to install Windows XP on a second computer, you'll have to
purchase a second license. Otherwise, the second installation will
not activate and you'll be in violation of the End User License Agreement.

Please take a moment to read the EULA.

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.
Click on "End-User License Agreement".

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

Let me correct what you say first - your answer lies in the correction:

This line:
I just bought the commercial upgrade to XP Pro for my home computeres.

Should read:
I just bought the commercial upgrade to XP Pro for my home computer.

As with every OS Microsoft has released since at least Windows 95, the End
User License Agreement that you agree to when you install and use the
Operating System clearly states that can install and use the license on one
(and only one) computer.

This has not changed in quite some time. What has changed is the end-users
ease in which they installed multiple copies without issue before. Now
Windows XP requires "activation", this makes it more difficult to ignore the
license agreement that comes with the operating system and install it on
multiple PCs than previous Windows OSes.

Essentially - unless you start to research and learn more about computers
and computer software - more than at least you obviously read the agreement
you agreed to when installing Windows XP and previous Windows OSes - then
you will have to purchase a retail upgrade license for each PC you wish to
upgrade to Windows XP. Perhaps Google searches or some computer oriented
individual you know can help you in other ways.

Just as it says, right on the box, you'll need to purchase a
separate WinXP license for each computer on which you install it.

As it has always been with all Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.
