What is the cheapest (legal) way to do either of the following?

(a) Upgrade Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional?

or

(b) Install Remote Desktop Access onto a Windows XP Home machine?

(That is actually the only XP Pro feature we need.)

I am a qualified academic user but this is for my wife to use on her machine
for business purposes, so I assume the academic upgrade package (about $100
here) is not suitable. The regular upgrade costs about $200.

There used to be a low-cost upgrade from Home to Pro. Is that still
offered?

Remote Desktop is only available with Windows XP Professional.
It cannot be installed in Windows XP Home Edition.

Get started using Remote Desktop with Windows XP Professional

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.
