How many graphics cards have you owned ?

Nick Le Lievre

Ok this will be fun list all the PC graphics you ever bought and price paid
/ year (if you have those details) I start obviously;

Tseng Labs ET4000 1MB ISA 1993 (came with my first PC 486 cost £ 1200)
S3 Vision 964 Diamond Stealth 2MB VRAM 1995 £ 250 PCI 2D Only (local
supplier)
3DFX 3D Monster Voodoo 2 8MB PCI 3D only (linked to Diamond 2D card 1998 £
170 (local supplier)
nvidia TNT2 Non Ultra OEM 16MB AGP 1999 £ 110 (trade price local supplier)
nvidia Geforce DDR 32MB AGP 2000 £ 130 (overclockers.co.uk)
3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 AGP £ 70 2000 (dabs.com) for 2nd PC
nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400 32MB AGP £ 70 2001 (dabs.com) for 2nd PC
nvidia Geforce 2 GTS 32MB AGP £ 70 2001 (dabs.com) entry level gfx for new
built PC replacing one sold with the Geforce DDR
nvidia Geforce 2 MX 200 32MB AGP £ 25 2002 (dabs.com) to run in a server
nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4200 64MB AGP £ 65 2003 (uk.adverts.computer) my current
card
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB AGP £ 130 2004 eBay.com (to replace current card
which will go into 2nd PC)

TCO £ 1090 ($1918) graphics budget over 9 years.

Let me see.

S3 trio 62 2meg (came with P120 which I paid $2400) when changed over from
Amigas
TNT2 M64 $250 which rocked. Brought it to play games
GeForce2MX400 $400 Had to buy when started playing Rainbow six.
GeForce4MX460 $380 needed an upgrade and this was 2 years ago. Still can't
justify a change. Card runs nicely over 600mhz with a 9.6Gb/sec andwidth.

So that was 7 years. total of $1030NZ which is about US$600 in 7 years.
Not bad. Some people pay that for one card.

You've also missed a whole bunch of eye candy with those cards so the
savings had a cost - visuals. It's the same idea comparing a 36" TV to a
42" Plasma. ;)

Here's my list:

1 MB (no idea about brand - 286/12 MHz system) - 1990
S3 Virge IIRC - (build in P166 system) - 1996
Voodoo2 upgrade - $150 or $200 cannot recall 1997
TNT2 - $200
V3 3000 - $200
V5 5500 - $300
GF ti500 - $330
GF4 Ti4400 - used - $100
GF FX 5900 Ultra (new machine $400).

Total cost ~$1800 in 7+ years (won't count the old built in cards).
Assuming my 5900 is used for 18 months that's about $200/year for video
hardware - not too shabby.

J

JAD

My first card was a 4 color 8 bit IBM ISA --- about 160.00$ back in the day
Then stuck with diamond multimedia/S3:
many Stealth extremes 32meg PCI's (50.00$)
FireGL 3000 (2700.00$)
on a used machine- 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000
until ATI's:
128 rage pro AIW, 7500 AIW, 9200, 9500 pro, 9700pro,

Oh boy, I'll see what I can remember of the new cards I've bought...

256K VGA ISA card in 1991
1MB ASI Winjet ISA card in 1993 or 1994
1MB S3 Trio64 PCI card in January 1996
4MB ATI Xpert XL PCI card in June 1999
8MB ATI Xpert 98 AGP card in January 2000
32MB ATI Xpert 2000 AGP card in April 2000
32MB Asus GeForce2 MX AGP card in April 2001
64MB MSI GeForce3 Ti500 AGP card in June 2002
128MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AGP card in March 2003
128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP card in July 2003

I've owned other video cards in other systems, but I'm just focusing on my
main rig over the years (minus when I downgraded computers in 1997 and went
through a rebuilding period).

BelaLvgosi

huh, some oak 1mb back in 91 (with a 386), sold
trident something that sucked in 95 with new p120
replaced in 95 by a s3 trio 64v+ $100 (2d), sold
97 matrox mystique 2mb (2d/3d, no true transparency effects, but very nice
to play mech2 and screamer 2/rally with hd accel, few dx games supported
it ) $170 (still running in this computer for dual monitor)
98 matrox m3d 4mb (power vr pcx2) $90 got tired faster... nothing suported
it (getting dust)
98 cl voodoo2 12mb (3d only) $180
99 cl voodoo2 12mb (SLI mode :D ) $120, pair sold
00 tnt2 m64 32mb, sad, but was way faster then the SLI in a slot A athlon...
and q3 looked much better, sold quick after buying
00 herc gf2mx 32mb 5.5ns ...$170, working in this computer
01 cl gf3ti200 16mb 4.0ns $260, sold
02 old cl tnt 16mbs from a friend $12.5, working in a server
03 cl gf4 ti4200 8x 64mb 3.6ns $109, working as a cheap replacement to the
gf3

$1311.5, always in half/low range cards, my highlights were the v2 12mbs
sli, gave me almost 3 happy years with only a k6 200mhz that kicked my
friends p2's and k6-2 with 740's and tnt's.
The gf3 lasted very well on a tb1333, as I hate AA, It served me well and I
almost note no difference to the 4200 I got to replace it, as I don't play
very often. I regret the tn2 and powervr, the others served me well.

50 Voodoo1
50 Banshee
For Sale Voodoo3 2000
50 Voodoo3 3000
50 GF2 MX
100 GF2 PRO
75 GF3 Ti200
2nd PC GF4 Ti4200
ATI 9800 PRO
=============================
435 Cards Sold (credited)
$835 Total Spent

My Voodoo3 is in another PC because its video card failed... but I may
keep the replacement for trade (ATI9000PRO,RMAed) as the Voodoo3 is in
an OLD P3 Computers... and not usable in todays hardware)

I built and sell PCs, so I've UPGRADED when I could SELL my video
card. So for the Ti4200 - I really paid $75 to upgrade over the GF3
card.... or the Voodoo1 - it was $125 - but I had traded a HUGE box of
PC books (Given by a client who threw them away) at a stupid PC Trade
store.... so I really paid $25 out of pocket money... back then the
Voodoo2 was a 8mb $250 video card!!

The ATi9800 was included with a computer system it wasn't supposed to
be included with, for a business PC (today, it has NEVER played a 3D
game)... so do I, (A) Sorry ****, you didn't invoice this card or (B)
Use available video that was paid for and put in own PC. PS: I got
the 9800Pro just before the 9800XT was annouced... ;)

(And yes, if it went to a client or friend who was into games, I would
have left it in) PS: The system was already discounted off $400. ;)
