how hot is too hot?

AsusP4c800E Deluxe, P4 3.2 Northwood, 1024 PC400 memory etc. Sonata
case with one rear 120mm Nexus fan and Zalman CPU cooler with Zalman
heat pipe on ATI Video card.

Summer on the east coast - humid and hot.

CPU reaching 43 or 44 C
motherboard reaching 33 C
hard drive (Seagate SATA) reaching 45 C

I have a fan control on the CPU cooler and I can increase it - I have it
low because I want quiet - but not at the cost of potentially damaging
the machine.

Are these numbers too hot? What is the highest "safe" CPU temp etc.?

that is too cold. I get 60C cpu, 36C motherboard, 55C harddrives

55C (131F) is kinda hot for the disk drives I'm familiar with.

Look at the spec sheet on the manufacturer's web site and find the
conservative operating temp. Every 10DegF hotter than that figure cuts
the avg drive life in half, or at least it used to.

Those numbers are fine.
My 3.2 Northwood with a Zalman CPU cooler usually runs around 42c or so
uwith no load, and low 50's under full load.

3.2's run hotter than the slower P4's.

Those numbers are just great. You have no reason to be concerned at
all.

You can easily run 55C without worry. I just would not like to see
those temperatures constantly.

We are also here on the East Coast. The boxes in the production
department all run at 55-60C without a problem. Have so for years and
they go 24/7.

Offhand I'd say you could make your hard drive last longer by improving
the ventilation for the drive. I could be wrong ...

thats because because he has Cpu under socket sensor & you have onDie
reading; MoBo sensors on yours is in a different place than his too ..

above 55°C in summer. I would try to reduce the temp of your HD's,
however. My WD Raptor (10k rpm SATA) is now running 33°C and the Maxtor
160gb PATA 38°C, but I have a dedicated fan for the drive bay in this Antec
case. It's interesting that the faster-spinning SATA always runs cooler
than the PATA.

This is nothing to do with the SATA/PATA, as this is purely the interface
the drive uses. Inside, both drives use the same technology.

The Seagate site gives a max of 50c for their "older" drives and 60c for
their "newer" drives. I think it's safe to assume that any SATA drive
is considered "newer"?

Just replaced an old case with an updated antec SLK3700AMB. Have
120mm rear and front. WD250G ATA idles at 28C (case temp is 28C), ran
mcafee virus scan on about 400,000 files and peak temp on the smart
temp diode was 36C. Actual load temps were averaging around 35C.

I highly recommend this case design for keeping your hard drives cool
and healthy.

could it be that some hds just report a lower temperature and not the actual
temperature? I have a maxtor that runs 10degrees cooler than the other 2
temp reporting hds in my system.. seems a bit fishy

Yea, I'm OC'ing my 2.66 P4 to 3.2ghz and when playing an intensive 3D
game it can reach 60c. Right now it's reading 45.5. No problem at all
and that's just using the stock Intel HSF. I should put on a better
HSF but even the stock one is fine with these temps.

Could it be that the ATA drive has a flat cable that blocks air flow,
whereas the SATA has a skinny round cable?

There is that, however if the cables are setup correctly in the first
place, the flat ones shouldn't block airflow all that much really
