How Does one stop a page loading at start up

I have XP prof installed for some time but only in the last week or so whenever I log on I get My Documents and a search assistant on the task bar start up automaticaly even when I uncheck the search assistant it comes onevery time I log on.
As for the other users on this computer they get internet explorer and search assistant start automaticaly ?????? How can I switch them off the auto start
Can anyone help
