how does IE determine where to put temporary files?

I am trying to troubleshoot one of the weirdest problems on a customer site.
We are a software development company. I am a code monkey. This problem does
not seem code related, but something in a combination between a given server
and some clients.

Looking at temporary files for 2 different people, one whose machine is
working and one not, I see 2 different things. One has temp files sitting
in c:\documents and settings\username.domainname\local settings\temporary
internet files. They are all dumped there. another person has c:\documents
and settings\username\temporary internet files. In this folder there are a
bunch of other folders (QSQV3R3Y for example) with different files from our
app in several different folder.

Can someone tell me how IE determines where to put temp internet files? This
is IE6 sp2 in both cases.

Thanks

S

TIF is truly a system of "smoke and mirrors", Stephanie. Windows or an
Administrator determines the location of TIF, not IE itself.

For any user, the folder ID'ed at IE Tools>Internet
Options>General>TIF>Settings>Current Location is the only one to be
concerned with. In WinXP SP2, the default location is...

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

Those using Roaming Profiles will find a different location listed as
determined by the administrator. Roaming Profiles point user profiles to a
network location. (cf. http://snipurl.com/9fq5)

The location of the folder really doesn't matter and can be changed via
Tools>Internet Options>General>TIF>Settings>Move Folder.

"Pay no attention to [any other folders referencing 'Temporary Internet']
behind that curtain!" (Especially anything 'Content.IE5'-related)

To quote MVP Kelly Theriot, "The Temporary Internet files aren't really
files but entries in %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat."
