in windows xp you can click on the repair button to repair a connection. how
do you do this in vista? i have looked for 20 minutes or so and can't find
anything. nothing i tried either worked. i installed a new cable
modem/router combined and now have a new lan ip type stuff. it won't get the
new ip etc, it is keeping the old one. so how can i repair?

Try using Diagnose. It's in the context menu (right-click) of the
connection icon in your tray, or look in the Network Center for it.

I have and it doesn't fix anything. It just sits there doing nothing except
scrolling the bar left to right. When it does something all it does is tell
me I can only connect to the local lan. re3booting pc also doesn't fix it.
disable then re enable the network connection or even creating a new one
doesn't do anything. and each time it's still getting the other routers ip,
not the new one.

Oh yeah, duh. Ha, I knew that, but way far back in my mind lol. I'll try it.

That may not fix it. Don't know about Vista but sometimes in XP you have to
do a reboot after ipconfig /release before it will connect to a different
DHCP server.

True.
Well for some reason vista fixed itself eventually. it said it couldn't
connect and then i clicked a button in that window and finally it connected.
so maybe it was a dhcp lease time timemout thing that it had to wait for the
dhcp to loose its lease.
