I want to start making backups of the database, but how would I do it? I'm
not really familiar with this.

Thanks.

This is best done OUTSIDE of Access. Simply be sure that nobody has
the .mdb (or .mde) file containing the data open, and use Windows
Explorer or a backup utility to copy the entire database to backup
media.

What would happen if I make a mistake and someone is inside the database
when I try the backup?

It won't do anything to the user(s) in the database, but the backup may not
be usable.
