How do you change the default settings on viewing video?

My browser plays video on the left hand side of the browser window, I hate
it! How can I change it so it will open up a new window to play the video?
 
May not be able to help but it would be nice to know what program you use.
 
Well since this is an internet explorer 6 newsgroup, that may be a good
assumption that I'm running IE. I think that would be pretty accurate.
