hi there-
i know, i have heard this too, and i'm not keen on fiddling with the
registry, but i need my adobe reader back! so what do you suggest (to
get a working adobe reader on my system)? and just to recap.......i
already tried xp's add/remove tool (both remove and change). and i
tried to install the same version and a newer version of AR over it,
and i got that same error. thanks.

IMO there are some good registry maintenance apps out, but ... I don't think
the registry is your problem here. Some file somewhere is corrupted;
someone has snipped your original problem descrip so it's not visible here
but that's what I seem to recall.
Try this:
Critical: Back up the registry by backing up the System State so you can
get it back of something goes south. Also a good idea to update your data
backups. If anything goes wrong you can Restore it from Safe Mode, OR first
try using "last known good configuration" in the screen menu as Safe Mode
starts up. Restart afterwards.
Try doing an online scan here:
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/ If
no help, and I don't think it will be, proceed to the next step. Restart
afterwards.
Do a Search for all Adobe references on your C (boot) hard drive.
Delete any that are not .PDFs, including the folders. If there are any PDFs
you want to keep in a folder to be deleted, copy them elsewhere first so you
won't lose them.
Restart and see what happens.
If still problems, download and run free ccleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ . The download is at:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/ .
Good luck; let is know what happens.
