How do Search Engines Pick up your sites

JCO

I want to know how Search Engines pick up the details of a website.
My under standing that this. Once you have you FP up, File | Properties
brings up a dialog with the category General | Keywords. My understanding
is that you can put anything in this space and the search engines will
search those words.

Is this correct?
Is their more to it?

Yes, but so many sites have abused this facility that
search engines now make little or no use of it.
Basically, sites fill up their KEYWORDS meta tag with
whatever they think will create a lot of hits, regardless
of the true content of their site.

As a result, most search engines now place a lot more
weight on the words that actually appear on your Web
pages.
