Ranking in Search Engines - question

Brenda

I have created a new website for a girlfriend who does genealogical research
in upstate NY:

http://www.brickwallbuster.com/

Is there anything I can do (that I'm not doing) that would help the ranking
of her website in search engines?

GoDaddy.com is hosting her website. Right now, she is paying from month to
month because she is on a very limited income. She buys her domain name on
an annual basis. Someone has told her that if she purchases her domain name
for a 10 year period (at once) that will help her ranking in search engines.
(Is this true?)

Thank you,
Brenda

Does that person work for a company that sells domain names?
I doubt it...how would paying for 10 years effect your ranking...how would
anyone know how many years you paid for?

there's tons of info on seo on the web...just don't buy$ (for money) any of
it.

I've done quite a lot of research (for an amateur) regarding ranking
of web sites and found two items that seem to make the most
difference.

1. You need as many links to your web site as possible from other
webs. I've found that using my web address as a signature on forums
helps a lot.

2. On your home page the words you use are picked up by the search
engines. To help this pick your text carefully and make sure you have
appropriate words in your alt text. Also, a trick I've done is to
place the most relevent text inside links (see site). Do not put
hidden or tiny text on the site as I understand that the search
engines are getting smart enough to recognize this and will give you a
low ranking.
