how do i work with system recovery console

This morning suddenly my windows xp donesn't load. It says that it has
a file corrupt in system32/config/system. I must repair the file.. I
inserted my xp cd and there were three options one was to install the
windows the other to repair windows installation and other to quit
without setup. When i used the second one it flashed the command
prompt... what am i suppose to do?
