How do I use word documents template and conserve the format in ou

When I use my Outlook XP 2003, I tried to use the create new letter (action)
for a business contact and I was able to chose different templates. However,
I felt a personally created template would look better. So I created a
template with a graphics and special margins and performed a dry run.
Unfortunately, the formating was no longer conserved. Why is that? and Is
there a way to prevent this from happening?
