how do I use the bullets and the numbering together

If it's an academic document, then it's not normally done to "mix and match"
bullets and numbers....
 
Apply your numbered list style to the next paragraph. Or, if you have set up
an outline-numbered list (recommended), then you use Shift+Tab or
Alt+Shift+Left to promote the paragraph from the bulleted level to the
numbered one.
