How do I use hyperlinks to generate a document in Word?

I want to be able to generate a Word document which consists of many files,
and those files will constantly be updated, and some may be discarded while
others are included, and the order of the files will change. Instead of
copying and pasting file after file into one doc each time I want a new
document, my idea is to create a list with hyperlinks to the files I want. I
know how to do that, but don't know how to then generate the doc. How do
execute the hyperlinks to open the corresponding files and then add them to
the same doc in the order that the hyperlinks are listed? Basically, I want
to create a TOC then generate the document.

Hi bossanova:

Step1

Create a bookmark for the whole text document of one file which is the
source document and then create a target file and use Use INCLUDE field along
with the book . (To understand how INCLUDETEXT is used in the Target
document, refer to the online help information in Microsoft Word 2003)
application

Important: Apply style to heading before creating bookmart, so that you need
not have to create the style sheet again in the Target document.

Step 2:

Do the following:

If you have applied the heading styles to each heading in the Microsoft Word
Target document, then On the Insert menu, point to Reference and then click
Index and reference. Click the Table of Contents Tab, and generate the Table
of Content. Under General, select a template from the Format list and then
click OK

It is not necessary to bookmark the text if the entire file is to be
included. This is necessary only to specify a "range" if part of the
document is to be used. See http://daiya.mvps.org/includetext.htm
