How do I unlock/unfreeze my cursor on Excel?

Say I have an Excel file with numerous worksheets-- when I click on the Sheet
2 tab (for example), all of Excel suddenly becomes non-responsive. A small
page icon starts following my cursor around and I can't do anything.

Similarly, if the first thing I do when I open Excel is click on a cell, it
won't let me unclick the cell. I'm stuck there too.

It's not unique to any one Excel document-- basically any time I get into
Excel, I am able to do one task (highlight a cell, click on a worksheet) and
then it locks up. I imagine there is just a default option that I have
selected for my Excel documents that is causing Excel to freeze, but I have
no idea what that is. Please help.

Its not the scroll lock key is it?
If not, have you got any non standard add-ins installed or other code
running?
click Tools>Add-ins and un select anything in there, re start excel and see
if things are ok

cheers
