how do I undo the insert page command?

I have page numbers that have a strange style to them. I inserted them using
the insert page command rather than opening the header and footer and
inserting them that way. How do I remove them now?
 
If you double-click on the page number it will appear with a box around it -
then you can press delete to remove it.
