Both drives have been in the system separately, but now I want them
both XP insists on making the IDE Master = drive F, and the IDE Slave
= drive E. I have tried disabling them in the bios singly and
together, but however I re-enable them they come up the wrong way
round.

Change one to a letter you don't use if the other CD ROM has the letter you
want.
Change the other CD ROM to a letter you do want.
Change the first CD ROM's letter to the letter you want.

It's just a matter of doing things in the right order.

When you disable and re-enable in bios XP still retains what it was set to
when it was last connected if using the same channel and master/slave
setting.

The letters are recorded in XP's registry. To change, go to Control
Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk Management and
look lower right for the graphic of the hard drive and CD Icons

You can right click any of the CD icons, or in any hard drive partition
except the one where the system is, and take 'Change drive letter'
..

Thanks for that. I didn't know you had to have a CD in the drive
before they even show up on the list though !

To change drive letters,
1) "Start|Administrative Tools|Computer Management"
2) Under "Storage", click on "Disk Management"
3) In the Main Menu, click on "Actions", then click on "All tasks", and
choose "Change drive letters and paths"

Then,

1) Rename drive "F:" as drive "G:"
2) Now that the drive letter "F:" is freed, rename drive "E:" as drive "F:"
3) Rename newly-named drive "G:" as drive "E:"

Don't forget to adjust the paths of shortcuts if they address either of
these drives.

Oh - I used the bottom graphical section. So that explains why they are not
in the top. But I seem to recall my ZIP drive shows up without disk in it.
