How do I stop Outlook from Synchronizing Folders?

Hi,
I run Microsoft Outlook 2003 on WindowsXP SP2.

I do not know what I did wrong, but after cleaning up temporary files,
cookies etc and and running virus checker, suddenly:-

In Outlook, when I click on 'Send Receive' the program does not receive
my email as it used to, instead a hitherto new icon appears in the
System Tray, which when resting my mouse on it says "Microsoft Outlook
is Synchronizing Folders".

This icon remains indefinitely, and Outlook does not receive my mail.
When I close Outlook, the icon disappears.

Additionally, shutting down takes about 10 times as long as it did
previously.

Please advise how to stop this Synchronizing and to restore my computer
to its previous good working condition.

Thank you.

Rex.

Hi,
Just an update. I hope somebody reads this and can help.

I used 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' to go back about three
days prior to cleaning out mentioned above.

Send/Receive works properly again- Except -
the above mentioned 'Microsoft Outlook is Synchronoizing Folders' icon
appears in the System Tray, but thankfully only momentarily, and then
disappears after the email is received.

Please can somebody tell me what I have to do to totally stop that
Synchronizing process as indicated by the icon, taking place?

Thank you,

Rex.
