Everytime I open up a new document, document map appears on left side. I
close it but it appears each time I open another document, new or old one. I
tried view and options to see if there was a default but couldn't find any.
Tried Help and couldn't find a solution.

Please advise.

This appears to be an odd variant of the problem described at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm -- your Normal.dot
template has been saved with the Document Map showing, and that causes it to
display in all documents.

To remove it, you'll have to open Normal.dot directly, using the
instructions in that article.

Once Normal.dot is on screen, close the Document Map. Now type any character
and backspace to delete it -- this is necessary to make Word realize that
Normal.dot has been changed and needs to be saved. Save, and close the
template. Now open any document, and the Document Map should stay closed
until you display it manually.
