How do I set up an automatically updating filname in the footer?

I am working on a long document that will require several drafts with major
revisions. Is there a way to update the filename in the footer that, when
printed, will show which version i.e., version 1, version 2, etc., the reader
is editing? I have tried entering a field using &[Path]&[File] but it
doesn't save.
I'm using Word 2007

Hi Karen,

Assuming each version is saved with a new name, if you insert a FILENAME field into the footer, that will update automatically the
data after each File|Save As, though you may need to do a Print Preview to get the new name to show on screen.

Cheers
