Automatic filename in Footer

Dear Word Gurus,

One of our staff swears that at a previous organisation they worked at they
remember seeing a setting in Word (version 2003 they think) that they could
tick and it would automatically include a footer with a filename and pathname
for every document they opened.

Now I've been working with Word for some time now (and teaching it) and
other than manually changing a footer to include the filename autotext entry,
or creating a macro that will do these steps, or adding the filename field to
a footer in a template ... I've never heard or seen such a setting!

My only other thought is perhaps there is an "add-in" program that adds this
setting? Have any of you heard of such an automatic setting? Certainly
trolling through the previous posts here hasn't shed any light on it (or
Google).

I would appreciate any advice or thoughts on this one ... if only to confirm
I'm right or wrong!

As Graham and Doug have confirmed, there is no check-off option of this type
in Word straight out of the box. Although an add-in or AutoNew macro could
certainly do this, my guess is that the feature was provided by a document
management system. I think this is quite common in legal firms (I know every
document I get from my lawyer brother, no matter how personal, has a locator
number in very small print at the bottom).

Perhaps it is in the normal.dot, as I have done. I do have to change it by
selecting the default file location and clicking F9 after I have saved the
file for the first time. Of course, I do have to remember to do this.

I find that for sanity's sake, I must put the full file path in the footer
of 99% of my documents. Otherwise I could seldom find them again.

It's not a good idea to put this (or anything) in the header or footer of
Normal.dot, especially if you ever intend to print labels. Also, note that
if you have "Update fields" checked in the Print Options, you don't need to
update the field after saving the doc, as it will update at print time.
