I'm editing a document in Word, and every 20 pages or so, a header is
suddenly 4 inches deep, which is messing up my layout. How do I resize the
depth of a header, and what is going on that would scatter stuff like this
throughout my document?

Gueses:
You have a setting for "different first page" and multiple section breaks.
Possibly one of your headers is set for vertical alignment "center".
