Hi

I need to repair WindowsXP.
Any ideas how to do this?

There is something wrong with my Internet Explorer. It wont run the
online update no matter what I do. I have even installed IE7, but still
no good.

Plus certain websites dont look correct - their menus arent
displaying...
And I have exactly the same problem in Netscape 7

I am on a 3-yearold IBM ThinkPad.
The problem is that
a) it doesnt have a working CD
b) It never came with a WindowsXP CD in the first place! Apparently it
just comes with it pre installed on the CD and that's it!

As you can see I do have web access however.

- Any suggestions?

It really is that simple to find answers to most of the common problems
with Windows XP.

You can create and use Startup Setup 3.5 in floppy disks for too
repair Windows XP. Download the utility that creates them from the
Microsoft website:

[How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks]
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us

"The Setup boot disks are available so that you can run the Setup
program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM."

The guy doesn't have the CD-ROM. As for Boat, he'll have to find a way
to procure the CD-ROM, but he need a friend, that has a generic copy of
OEM WinXP.

On http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
"1. Boot the computer using the XP CD."

But my PC doesnt HAVE a working CD!
NOR did it come with one!

Somewhere on your system is a way to reinstall your operating system. I once
had an HP computer and it was in
All programs>HP tools>repair. (then a choice of destructive install
"reformat" or non-destructive repair "reinstall")
You should have something like that on yours as well.

But try this first.

He's going to have to look at what his computer actually has ( + plus what
he might be willing to buy ) and his options will become clearer.

This is a nightmare!

My IBM Thinkpad laptop appears to have some sort of damage (??).
The evidence is for this is

1. that when I attach my iPod to the PCMCI slot (ie a USB 2.0
connection) it crashes
after a while. And when it does so it COMPLETELY kills windowsXP stone
dead (esp whenever it has to copy a large file -e.g. my PST file!)
The iPod works fine and reliably on the old USB1 port however.

2. I can't get the CD-reader to work at all on my ThinkPad.

But how can I "Repair" the WindowsXP Pro installation?!

I now fear that the disk has become slightly corrupted by the "sudden
deaths" by
the (above) USB2.0 induced crashes - and that this has corrupted some
key
WindowsXP .DLL files (etc).

The PC is slow but seems broadly stable.
One critical problem is that I cant get Windows Upgrade to work - not
at all.

In desperation I have tried UNINSTALLING "SP2", and with a view to then

reinstalling it. The uninstall seems to have worked and I rebooted okay
back
to MS Explorer 6 (whereas I did have Explorer 7 installed -again out of
desperation!)
I have managed to dowload a huge file called
"WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" which is about 266MB (!!) and I am
very much
hoping that it will over-write any corrupted or missing .DLLs.

(It's taking one HECK of a long time to do so mind you!)

Meanwhile I had previously found a "\i386" directory in my C: drive
root.

But when I tried to run from a CMD window
"\386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons"
(in order to try to Repair my Windows XP)
it then came back moaning that it couldn't find the file
"C:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL"

I'm still waiting for the 266MB "SP2" file to install itself
- But am I on the right lines?

P.S. I would have been tempted to use the utility that IBM ThinkPad
proved
to format the disk and start again, however on reflection that would be
a TOTAL
nightmare - particularly negotiating with Microsoft to tell them that I
had to
trash my ms Office2003 and start again - plus similar problems with
Adobe/Macromedia
Dreamweaver... Plus I would lose all my password defaults, and of
course all my
network connections that have taken months to get right for the 3
different offices
that I work in... Aaaaargh!
[END]

Its impossible because Winblows XP is a piece of crap. Throw it out
your window and get a real computer and OS (a Mac)

I have an IBM ThinkPad and sadly it doesnt *appear* to have such a
utility.

Just the option to (format the disk?? and) reinstall losing EVERYTHING
but getting a
clean copy of WindowsXP Pro. Not great.

Thanks yes I did try the "sfc /scannow" thing but that didnt appear
to do anything very much... an it seems to run to completion and closes
without
any message at all.

This probably too late to be of use to you now, but did you try using:
Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore
BEFORE you starting tinkering with the commands that may have damaged your
PC registry even more?
