I have a new computer with Vista and I just bought a copy of Windows XP to
install. I'm running into setup up problems from the cd-rom to installation
of Windows.

Hello Westborough,

What is your problem? Booting, copying files to disk or what? Please clarify.

Best regards

Installing XP from within a running Vista won't work. You'll need to
boot the PC with the XP CD and install that way.

Once in from the boot, setup is pretty straightforward. Since you want
to completely remove Vista, when you get to the point in setup asking
where to install, select the existing partition with Vista and choose
the option to format that partition.

I think you'll find the XP setup pretty straightforward once you get it
going, but please post back here if you have any questions.

You can also refer to
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps for more
detailed steps if needed.

If you have an XP installation disk, boot from it and format the partition
on which Vista is currently installed during the text based portion of
setup.

You don't say how you are trying to install XP. If Vista is running, i.e.,
the vista desktop is visible, and you are trying to install XP by running the
XP CD then this is the reason you are having problems. You can't install XP
from within the Vista operating system.

Installing XP and Vista is pretty straight forward. In your case you to
ensure that the CD-ROm is the first boot option in the BIOS, then reboot the
machine and 'quickly' insert the XP CD into the CD-ROM. Installation should
then begin.

For more information i suggest you take a look at the illustrated guide to
installing XP on my website:

Hello,

The problem is that after two months of Vista I can't wait to get rid of it.

Hello,

I rebooted the computer, hit the enter key at the prompt to use the CD, it
installed and now it says that Windows can't find a hard drive?

Thoughts?

Thanks John,

I'm having problem with XP seeing the hard drive for some reason. I exited
from setup, but not sure what to do next.

Likely because the new pc has a SATA controller and the BIOS is
setup to use a operational mode that XP doesn't support -only Vista.
You're going to have to do some additional work on toggling the
mode ACHI to Native/IDE and then provide XP the proper Mass
Storage controller driver when the F6 prompt appears. The problem
with that is if the PC doesn't have a Floppy drive you'll have to make
a slipstreamed XP-CD to embed the SATA controller driver.

It sounds like your HDD is SATA and you'll need to load the drivers
before XP will see the it.
Have the drivers ready and hit f6 at start up and install them when asked.

You'll need to provide details on your hardware, especially hard drive,
configuration. Could be you have some setup where there are no native
drivers included in the XP setup disk. If that is the case, you'll need
to get the XP drivers for your HD equipment and insert that into the XP
setup.

During setup, you will see a prompt to press F6 in order to install
device drivers. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314859 for
additional information.

During the text based portion of Setup in Windows XP, you are given the
opportunity to load storage drivers for your hard disk by using the F6
function. Its possible you need to do that first before attempting to format
and install XP on the drive.

May just be a BIOS setting. It sounds like you have a SATA hard drive,
reboot and enter the BIOS make sure the PATA adaptor is enabled, see if
there might be a setting to run the SATA as a PATA and then reboot.

You may have to re-install, maybe not.
