how do I remove ICS - affecting a router network - which wizard option?

N

Nick

I have a cable modem linked to a dlink wireless router. I
have 2 XP PCs linked to it and also set up as a home
network that has worked ok for 2 years.

I have done something that has activated ICS - the
Internet Computer Sharing so that now the desktop PC
routes through the laptop to the net and the network is
slow and erratic. An icon "Internet Gateway has appeared
in the Network Connections window and shows a lot of
in/out traffic. "Disable" is greyed out. If I try and run
the network wizard and manually configure the network it
keeps picking up "Unknown Internet Connection sharing
Device" even though I select the wireless card.

Norton is up to date and shows no viruses.

ICS is not listed in Add/Remove windows components.
If I disable ICS in the "Servcies" window I lose the
internet connectivity.

Q1 - how do I permanently remove ICS.
Q2 - How do I get rid of the "Unknown Internet Connection
sharing Device".
Q3 - for a router, which Network option do I select -
"connects through another computer or residential
gateway", or "connects directly or through a network hub"

Thanks ...Nick

I think that everything's OK, Nick:

Q1: ICS isn't activated. The "Internet Gateway" is your D-Link
wireless router. Clicking the icon lets you monitor and control the
router's operation.

Q2: That device is your router, too. The Network Setup Wizard detects
it on the network and asks if you want to connect to the Internet
through it. Say "Yes".

Q3: The Wizard calls a router a "residential gateway".

Thanks Steve, you are correct, in theory,
On both PCs I disable the wireless connection and the
Internet Gateway disappeared and re-appeared when I re-
started it.

but I have some anomolies:

The "Gateway" shows enabled on the latop but disabled on
the desktop, but both connect to the internet.

On the laptop the ICS service is stopped and the
connection works ok.
On the desktop the ICS service is started, I can only stop
it by disabling and rebooting, then there is no connection
to the internet until I re-enable it. Oh ... it just
worked. However the "Gateway" is showing "disconnected"
despite having connected succesfully.

You help is greatly appreciated as it has clarified how
it "should" work. To be sure, I will remove the wireless
driver, reinstall and do a fresh connection.

Many thanks
nick
