How do I remove ghost messages stuck in sending mode?

I use Outlook 2003 to access my Yahoo e-mail account.

For the past week, there have been 4 "ghost messages" that appear to be
stuck in sending mode. I do not know what these ghost messages contain or
where/how they originated. These ghost messages do not appear in my Outbox
or in my Sent Items. Each time Outlook Sends/Receives, the ghost messages
appear. For example, if I send out 1 legitimate e-mail message, the counter
on the lower right hand side of Outlook will say "sending 1 out of 5
messages".

I have also noted that my legitimate e-mail will not be sent unless I close
Outlook and re-open it. Only then will the e-mail be sent from my Outbox.
If I try to send an e-mail without first closing and re-opening Outlook, it
seems that these ghost message block my message and prevent it from getting
sent.

I would appreciate suggestions on how to (1) purge these ghost messages
and/or (2) prevent this from happening.

Dear Brian,

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I think it was effective.

Do you have any suggestion for preventing a similar occurence?

Thanks again!

Regards.

The usual cause is the removal of an account after receiving a read receipt
request. Outlook always replies using the account that received the
original message, so if there's a read receipt scheduled for delivery and
you remove the account Outlook wishes to use to send it, then it will never
be deliverable. The problem should not recur because you no longer have the
account and won't be receiving messages with it, so no receipt requests will
arrive on that account.
